To Rug Or Not To Rug

With those classic spring showers rolling through, it is tempting to reach for a rug. But is it always necessary?
Leaving rugs off at this time of year can bring some real benefits.
Horses are far better at regulating their body temperature than we often give them credit for. Just because we feel cold does not mean they do. In fact, most horses are more comfortable slightly on the cooler side.
If a horse does feel a bit chilly, they will naturally burn more energy to keep warm. This can actually work in your favour during spring, when grass is rich and energy intake is higher than usual.
Then there is rolling. A proper roll is more than just a messy habit. It helps with grooming, scratching, drying sweat and even temperature regulation. It is also part of normal behaviour, and letting horses do what comes naturally often leaves them looking and feeling better.
As the season shifts and rain sheets get swapped for fly rugs, it is worth taking a moment to reassess.
Some horses genuinely need that extra layer. Those with sweet itch or high sensitivity to flies will benefit from protection. For others, a few flies are not always a bad thing. They encourage movement, stimulate natural behaviours and can even contribute to a little extra energy use through constant low-level activity.
Before you reach for a rug, it is worth asking if your horse really needs it.
Sometimes, less really is more.
