We hear a lot about gut health these days, for both humans and horses, but what exactly are these mysterious gut microbes everyone’s talking about? And more importantly, why do we need to keep them happy?
Let’s dive into the fascinating world of your horse’s hind gut — where billions of tiny superheroes are working hard every single day.
Meet the Gut Microbes
Gut microbes (or microbiota) are microscopic organisms that live in your horse’s large intestine. Horses are what we call hind gut fermenters, meaning the magic happens in the back end of their digestive system.
These microbes form a bustling community made up of bacteria, protozoa, and fungi. Together, they work in perfect harmony to break down the fibrous parts of your horse’s diet that can’t be digested earlier in the gut. It’s a well-oiled ecosystem of teamwork!
Fibre: The Super Fuel
Here’s where it gets really clever. When these microbes ferment fibre, they produce something called volatile fatty acids (VFAs). These VFAs are absorbed and used by the horse as a major source of energy.
So while humans eat fibre mainly to keep our digestion moving smoothly, horses need fibre as a vital energy source. Fibre isn’t just filler — it’s fuel!
A Built-In Biomass Boiler 🔥
The fermentation process doesn’t just create energy, it also generates heat. That’s why we often say horses are “heated from the inside out.” Their hind gut is literally acting like a natural biomass boiler, keeping them warm even on the chilliest days. This is why if your horse is unclipped with a good quality coat and in good health, they don't often need a rug, even when it's cold... they've got their own in-built central heating keeping them snug!
When Things Go Wrong
The gut microbial community usually lives in harmony, but it’s a delicate balance. Stress, sudden changes in diet, illness, or too much starch can easily upset the ecosystem.
When the gut is unhappy, your horse can show it through changes in behaviour, energy levels, or even mood. This is thanks to the fascinating gut-brain axis, the two-way communication system between the gut and the brain. In other words, a happy gut often means a happier horse.
Top Tips to Keep Those Hind Gut Heroes Happy
A few simple management tweaks can go a long way in supporting your horse’s gut health:
✅ Feed a high-fibre diet. Fibre is the lifeblood of the hind gut.
✅ Keep starch low. Too much starch can cause imbalances in the microbial community.
✅ Make changes slowly. Always introduce new feeds over at least two weeks.
✅ Offer gut support. During times of stress, travel, or dietary changes, consider supplements designed to nurture the gut microbes.
In Summary
Your horse’s gut microbes are the true unsung heroes of digestion, working around the clock to turn fibre into energy, warmth, and wellbeing. By feeding them right and treating them kindly, you’re not just supporting your horse’s gut… you’re supporting their overall health, behaviour, and performance.
So here’s to the hind gut superheroes — small in size, but mighty in impact!
